Are you Reposting?
When we are attacked by an adversary, whether naturally on the fencing strip or spiritually, we need to be able to defend ourselves. We use a defensive move called a parry.
Parry
Partial quote https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glossary_of_fencing
A simple defensive action designed to deflect an attack, performed with the forte of the blade. A parry is usually only wide enough to allow the attacker’s blade to just miss; any additional motion is wasteful.
As Christians, we are taught, maybe not overtly, that we should not attack Satan or he will attack even harder. Most of us will defend ourselves, then wait for the next attack. We are constantly on the defensive, using more and more of our energy. Satan loves to wear us down in the spiritual battle. This is not a good posture in fencing or in our spiritual conflicts. We need to go on the offensive by reposting after our first parry. We parry with the blade’s forte (meaning: strength in leverage). It is not in our own strength but in Jesus.
Ephesians 6:10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.
Isaiah 40:31 but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.
New International Version
You need to parry any and all attacks that come at you and riposte without delay by using the strength that has been given you in the blade in your hand, and in Jesus Christ.
Riposte
Partial quote https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glossary_of_fencing
An attack made immediately after a parry of the opponent’s attack.
By just parrying over and over and not reposting, we will never win the fight. Our defensive move is always a few milliseconds behind our adversary. We give our adversary the advantage, in time by seconds, when our only move is to parry repeatedly.
Both as fencers and as believers, we need to stop using defensive moves only, and begin to also go on the offensive to attack back. When you stop (defeat) the attacker, his weapon will no longer be able to harm you.
Application
- Familiarize yourself with every part of your weaponry (Ephesians 6:10–18 and 2 Corinthians 10:4)
- Study how Jesus defeated his adversary (Matthew 4:1-11)
