Jesus our Savior

When Joseph heard about Mary being pregnant, Joseph wanted to leave Mary. So God sent an angel to speak with Joseph and told Joseph about the coming child, that Jesus would save God’s people.

She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.”

Matthew 1:21

In the Christmas story, the angels came to shepherds in the field proclaiming the birth of Jesus. They did not just announce Him as the “Christ the Lord” but first and foremost a “Savior”.

And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.”

Luke 2:10-12 ESV

It is believed these were not just your typical shepherds, they were of the priestly order (Levitical). They were tending and raise lambs for the temple worship, not just any lamb but the ones that would be used in the Passover Feast. These lambs would have to be without any blemishes, so the priest/shepherds would care for them as little babies, wrapping them in swaddling clothes to keep them from bruising himself. So when the Angle spoke these things they knew he was the Lamb of God our Saviour.

We see later in Jesus’ life that he met a man named Zacchaeus, Jesus pronounces to him that he is the “Son of Man” and came with salvation to Zacchaeus’ house.

And Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor. And if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I restore it fourfold.” And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”

Luke 19:8-10 ESV

Jesus came to the world as a servant, without fanfare, he never outright claimed to be the savior of the world but through His action and demonstrations, the people around him knew who He was. Jesus announced the beginning of His ministry by meeting a samaritan woman at Jacob’s well. He shared with her about her life and the living water and announced that he was the Messiah. She took this information, and went back to her town and shared it with everyone. The townspeople can out to see Jesus and hear for themself, after hearing Jesus they knew who he was.

and they were saying to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves and know that this One is indeed the Savior of the world.”

John 4:42 ESV

The writer of Acts was recounting the genealogy up to King David and from there is references Jesus by stating in Acts 13:23 ESV “From the descendants of this man, according to promise, God has brought to Israel a Savior, Jesus, as he promised”.

Many have proclaimed in scriptures Jesus as the Savior of the World, but what were they being saved from. Jesus came and died and rose from the grave but still, the Hebrew people were being oppressed by the Romans. Jesus kingdom was not a natural kingdom but spiritual, Jesus came to save us not from oppressors, but from ourselves and the wages of our sin, we cause in our own lives. Paul shared these reasons when he wrote to his disciples, both Timothy and Titus.

It is a trustworthy statement, deserving full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, among whom I am foremost of all.

1 Timothy 1:15 ESV

For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works.

Titus 2:11-14 ESV

So how can we be saved for the law of sin and death, the Apostle’s gave us the way, and it is very easy.

“This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone. And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

Acts 4:12 ESV

For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.” For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

Romans 10:11-13 ESV

There are many people in the world telling us that there is many ways to get to God, but as you can see God’s own word tells us that Jesus is the only ways for our sins to be striped away. Jesus paid the price for those sin when He died on the cross. No one can come before the Father (God) if the have sin in their lives. We see from the above scriptures that Jesus came to save us from our sins.
