Suit Up! – Belt (2 of 7)

The first part of armor we must apply is the belt. This is not just a belt, they would have on an undergarment, like a tunic and maybe chain maille. This belt would hold all the items in place at you apply the rest of the armor. This belt would have helped distribute the weight of the chain maille from partially off the shoulders and on to the hips.

The belt allowed other parts of the armor to lock into the belt for support, like the breastplate. The Cuisses upper thigh protection would hang from the belt, as the sheath for a sword and even a dagger.

The belt held the armor together. If your belt failed during battle it would cause your armor to shift and you would become out of balance, make it harder to maneuver. Your weapons could fall and become out to reach.

Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth…

Ephensian 6:14a ESV

Truth is the belt we are to put on with our spiritual armor. Jesus Christ is that truth, He is the Way, the Truth and the Life (John 14:6).

So that brings up, What is truth?

Truth /tro͞oTH/
noun: truth
1. the quality or state of being true.
that which is true or in accordance with fact or reality.
a fact or belief that is accepted as true.

Our society to have given this generation a false positive of what truth is. We have allowed personal or societal feelings to replace truth. Truth is based on and in accordance with fact or reality.

An injustice is perpetrated is never right. That action that was perpetrated is the fact and reality of what happened, it is the truth, not the feeling of that wrong action. We are allowing policies and laws to be passed based on feelings and not the truth. Here in Michigan, we passed a law on recreational uses of marijuana. I personally believe this was one such law that was passed based on the feeling and not hard facts of what it will cost our citizens, society and future generations.

In the old testament the people cried out for a king and God allowed them to have a king over Israel, instead of God leading them. God warned them of all the cost that they still decided to have a king. This was not Gods perfect plan for them.

As a believer, we know that Jesus is our truth and that the word of God is always true. We need to put of Christ every day, he will hold us together and keep our walk stable.

The truth I am talking about is the Simple Truth of the gospel. That through Jesus and His work on the cross we have access to the rest of this armor; righteousness, peace, faith, salvation and the word of God. They all are lockin and supported by the belt of truth.

Speaking of Jesus “For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”

2 Corinthiians 5:21 ESV (italicised text added)

Jesus saidPeace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.”

John 14:27 ESV (italicised text added)

And Jesus answered them, “Truly, I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what has been done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ it will happen. And whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive, if you have faith.”

Matthew 21:21-22 ESV

…if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.”

Romans 10:9-11 ESV

For the word of God (the Bible) is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

Hebrews 4:12 ESV (italicised text added)

I will be coving each of these pieces of armor in later posts so that you will be able to fully put on the full armor of God. So that you can war a good warfare in pray.

Application

  • Apply the belt of truth to your life by accepting Jesus and his truths (see the gospel in 3 minutes)
  • Turn from your feelings about an issue and seek God on His truth of that issue
  • Seek out God’s truths and not mans truth
