What Seed Are You Sowing

Jesus shared this parable with his disciples.

He put another parable before them, saying, “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field, but while his men were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat and went away. So when the plants came up and bore grain, then the weeds appeared also. And the servants of the master of the house came and said to him, ‘Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then does it have weeds?’ He said to them, ‘An enemy has done this.’ So the servants said to him, ‘Then do you want us to go and gather them?’ But he said, ‘No, lest in gathering the weeds you root up the wheat along with them. Let both grow together until the harvest, and at harvest time I will tell the reapers, “Gather the weeds first and bind them in bundles to be burned, but gather the wheat into my barn.”

Matthew 13:24-30 ESV

The kingdom of God has been compared to a farmer’s field. We have taken the time to prepare the ground by turning over the sod, removing all the large rocks, and taking out any weeds. In that field, we sow seed in the fields of our lives expecting to receive a harvest. We have planted many types of seeds, seeds of compassion, peace, love, family, and success to name a few.

Your adversary comes in the night and sows other weed seeds in your field. When both seeds began to grow, the master of workers did not see a difference until they began to produce fruit. Then they noticed the difference. This is the hard part about weeds; you may not notice the difference until both have a good root system established.

There is hope the good seed still produced a harvest in the field. It just took more effort to obtain the produce. Not only did they have to gather the good produce, but they also had to gather the weeds, remove them from the field, and burn them.

If we don’t abort the process by trying to remove the weeds too early in the growing process, pulling up our good plants before they have a chance to produce, then we would not have to sort our plants. How much more quickly we would obtain the increase in our fields?

I know our adversary sows the weed seeds, but I encourage you not to sow weed seeds in your own field. When speaking negatively about yourself, your family, or situation you are sowing weed seeds. This can either be by speaking out loud or just in your thoughts. You are a seed carrier; there is life and death in the power of your tongue. Speak life.

…. that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose life, that you and your offspring may live,

Deuteronomy‬ ‭30:19‬ ‭ESV

Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.

Proverbs‬ ‭18:21‬ ‭ESV

One of the biggest weed seed sowings we have and use is our mind. We have to begin to and continue to control our thoughts and not let our words become weed seeds in our lives or the lives of others. When we let our minds run on and on about a situation without checking it to the Word of God, we are sowing weed seeds. If a thought comes into your mind and you know it is contrary to the Bible you need to reject that thought and ask God to replace it with His Word. This is the process of taking every thought captive.

We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ,

2 Corinthians 10:5 ESV

A simple or quick thought is not what sows the seed. It is when you meditate on it or ponder the possible negative outcomes that cause the weed seeds to be sown.

APPLICATION

  • Realize that your life is a field and you have a choice of what types of seeds you sow into it.
  • Once you have sown the good seed, make sure you do not sow the negative (bad) seed alongside your good seed.
  • Take every thought captive, so you are not sowing the bad seeds in your own or other’s lives.
